What is the first state university in Nigeria?

The Rivers state university of science and technology, RSUST is the very first state university in Nigeria. As earlier said, it was established in 1972 as a College of science and Technology. In 1980 it was granted independent University status and was renamed from college of science and technology to Rivers state university of Science and Technology.

Some schools of thought are of the opinion that it is not the first state university in Nigeria considering the fact that it was established as a college of science and technology prior to 1980. To them, Enugu state university of science and technology, ESUT was the first state university in Nigeria even though it was established in 1979, because ESUT started as an independent university.

Hence, depending on the angle from which you view it, RSUST was the first state university in Nigeria while ESUT was the first independent state university in Nigeria.
